Morning Prayer Video

Interesting synchronicity my Facebook feed showed this old memory of writing Morning Prayer as I was uploading the new music video to youtube. "Finished the first song for my new album this morning. The words and melody seemed to flow effortlessly however that doesn't mean it was easy. Emotionally I am feeling kind of drained its a tender song of what I thought was joy or gratitude but now seems more one of reverence or perhaps acknowledgement of a difficult path. I seem to be digging deeper within even though I am writing about someone else." For me this feeling was captured in recording with the amazing Adam Popowitz on lead ambient guitar, heartfelt Alice on synth for cello, sublime Malcolm Aiken on flugelhorn and I played the 12 string guitar and sang it. I hope you are transported by it.

November Skies

"My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world." Jack Layton

Hello Friends
With the recent US election, Brexit and DAPL Stand at Standing Rock, the unexpected is happening all around the world and causing us to take notice in these changing times. I am an idealist and believe humanity is best served united rather than divided. I remain hopeful that we can become the change we want to see in this world as Gandhi once said. I am also pragmatic and know this evolution takes awareness, vision and working for the common good of all. I will work for peace and love in the best way I know how, with art and music.

I have been hard at work the past months writing grants for some upcoming projects for film.  I have some wonderful artists on board and hope to bring you exciting news in the coming months!

Review Fix Exclusive Interview

Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Norine Braun, who discusses her new album, “Gone to the Spirits” and the unique inspiration behind it.
Review Fix: What was your creative process like for this album?

Norine Braun:
The process for writing this album was one of 20 years and was the longest
one yet! The idea for this album first came to me when a friend of mine was in graduate school doing a master’s in archaeology. He was studying the journals of explorers in western Canada and kept coming across Gone To The Spirits and told me of her story. He thought I should write a song about her and I was so amazed by her life I thought her worthy of a whole
album at least and was not yet ready to write that album. I have matured and grown as a person and a songwriter and felt ready to write her story in song. Upon completion of the recording I wanted to deepen the understanding for the listener and decided to write a short story to further explain my vision of Gone To The Spirit’s incredible life journey. The short story is read aloud at the end of the album.
Review Fix: What do you think makes it special?
Braun: What makes it special is that few people know of this Ktunaxa warrior woman from the early 1800s. Very few women of the fur trade or First Nations women are written about or known of. The fact that Gone To Spirits transitions gender is also very timely and is interesting to see how older cultures embraced differences.
Review Fix: Is there a song that stands out for you?
Braun: That is difficult to say as each song is important in the telling of her story. Morning Prayer is more a chant song as there is no bridge or chorus. The music is a sublime ideal in what is prayer? How does prayer sound and feel and what is grace? In my research for this album I spoke with a Yaqan Nukiy elder who told me of his custom to begin each day with a morning song and end each day with an evening song. To me this is prayer and the elder was taught this practice by his grandmother. I thought perhaps Gone To The Spirits also followed this ritual coming from the same area. I wondered too what would people pray for over 200 years ago and the more I reflected, I thought for the same things we pray for today and thus formed the basis of the lyrics.
Review Fix: What was the creative process behind it? Is there a story?
Braun: The creative process was one of research and reading. I was awarded a Canada Council of the Arts to write the album in 6 months. I visited several museums and archives in Vancouver, Calgary, Cranbrook and CrestonBC.  I met with a Yaqan Nukiy elder and a Ktunaxa archivist as well as an interpretive center guide. Traveling through the area and experiencing southeastern British Columbia helped me express the story as well. Interestingly, my friend who first suggested writing about her in song became the advisor for the project and is also department head at SFU First Nations studies. The project came full circle. The songs center around the engaging and dramatic life story of a legendary two spirited Ktunaxa warrior woman, courier and guide, who lived in the early 19th century in southeastern BC Canada who appeared in the journals of trappers and explorers of the time.
Review Fix: How is this album different from your previous work?
Braun: This concept album is based completely upon a historical person.  Most of my previous works tended to be about self-exploration, universal themes and life in general. This was very focused and thoughtful with much research and planning.
Review Fix: What have you learned about yourself through this album?
Braun: I learned I love to research and to explore and I am at my best when following my intuition. I realized in this process how dedicated I am to my craft and vision and I am thankful so many people were willing to help me and give me insight into Gone To The Spirits. I originally applied for the award five years prior but was not given the grant. I persisted and it
paid off! I knew it was an important story and deserved to be heard and I never gave up.
Review Fix: How do you want it to be remembered?
Braun: I want it to be remembered as the concept album story about Gone To The Spirits a legendary two-spirited First Nations warrior woman from the early 1800s. I truly hope people will realize there are many stories that are fantastic and amazing from history yet to be told. I hope this serves to inspire other songwriter’s and artists to explore history and create new works.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Braun: As an independent artist who is DIY I will be looking to get the short story published in literary magazines. I am also working with an artist/animator in creating a music video/ film for the album and we are applying for grants and funding to take Gone To The Spirits further. I am currently talking with local musical theatre professionals to help develop this story and the music into a musical as well.

Vancouver Sun July 26 - How Norine Braun came to story of Gone To The Spirits by Tom Harrison

Norine Braun
Sunday, July 31, 11 a.m. | Pride Festival, Sunset Beach
Tickets: Free

The parallel wouldn’t go away.
Norine Braun is aboriginal. Gone To The Spirits was aboriginal.
Braun is lesbian. Gone To The Spirits was a transgender.
Braun is a songwriter, a pursuit sometimes regarded as shamanistic. Mysterious.
Gone To The Spirits was a shaman. Her story is a mystery.

Vancouver artist Norine Braun recently released her 10th album, Gone To The Spirits. Image by Jaunty MEdia

The parallel between Braun’s life and Gone To The Spirits was obvious. The story of Gone To The Spirits had to be told in song. Braun, a songwriter, was the person to do it.
So, for her 10th album, Braun went back to her producer, Adam Popowitz, and made Gone To The Spirits. It’s her best album, incorporating rock, blues, latin, ambience and aboriginal song lore. If it rings true, though, it’s because it tells Braun’s story.
Gone To The Spirits was born in the early 19th century near Creston and Cranbrook as One-Standing-Lodge-Pole-Woman, living her life as a warrior, courier and guide. She was large enough to pass herself off as a man, married a woman, renamed him/herself Sitting-In-The-Water-Grizzly, was exposed as a woman, led battles and magical rites and died a mystic. Could be she/he was a hermaphrodite.
Gone To The Spirits shows up in the journals of fur trader, explorer and surveyor David Thompson. Reading those, 20 years ago, is how Braun came to know Gone To The Spirits.
“It certainly was challenging,” Braun allows. “But because her story was with me so long, it just flowed.
“I struggled with the transgender. Was she a lesbian? How was she transgendered? She was accepted as a man.
“She declared herself a prophet. For me, she was spiritual and I’m a spiritual person.
She related to Gone To The Spirit’s story.
“I think completely,” Braun admits. “I came out in the ’90s. I was a lesbian.”
Braun had submitted the album idea to the Canada Council five years ago and was rejected. She rewrote her application, read more of Thompson’s journals and travelled to Creston and Cranbrook to do research.  She resubmitted and this time was awarded an arts grant.
“It wasn’t the time,” she says of her first attempt. “But I thought it was a good story. I’m glad I didn’t give up.”
Although Braun is gay and aboriginal, she relies on neither community to support her. She gigs solo, duo, trio or with a band. Her first album was electro-pop, but there also has been rootsy folk. Gone To The Spirits embraces all those elements, helped by Popowitz’s thoughtful arrangements.
“I’ve never written anything with this much depth,” she explains.
“I feel like I’m a songwriter first. I didn’t want to restrict myself to one genre. I dunno; I’m a chameleon, I guess.”

Summertime With Gone To The Spirits

Hi

I hope you have been having a great summer so far! Summer is the busiest season for musicians. I have lots of gigs to let you know about, an interview with Patrick Hickey Jr. on Review Fix  and some reviews.

“GONE TO THE SPIRITS Talks" The interview on my writing process.

Norine Braun is an artist from Vancouver who has recently released her 10th (yes, 10th) album, Gone to the Spirits. The amazing part about this album is that the entire concept is based around warrior woman, courier, and guide Ktunaxa, who lived in the early 19th century. If after that description, you’re thinking that you’re about to hear something very powerful and filled with higher meaning than you’d ever imagined, I’d have to say that you’re right.  - Kristy Linkous Indebandguru
Verdict overall is a solidly positive opinion of Brauns ambition and music... it seems like Norine is making an entire style of music I've never experienced before and that is a good thing isn't it. - Jer at Sleeping bag Studios
The track Bird With A Song to SIng is charting on the jazz charts at CFUV in Victoria BC too!

Gone To The Spirits Released!

Norine Braun

"One enters a sonic journey in this album, to another time where Gone To The Spirits story enfolds from ambient roots to worldly pop, jazz and blues.”

Gone To The Spirits is released!  Acclaimed Vancouver BC artist, Norine Braun, releasea her 10th album, Gone To The Spirits on June 4, 2016 via Braun and Brains Music.
The concept album was recorded and mixed with producer Adam Popowitz at Rear Window Song and Sound. The session players include: the Juno nominated Adam Popowitz on bass and lead guitar, Elliot Polsky on drums, Huggybear Leonard on blues harp, Alice Fraser on keys and accordion, Malcolm Aiken on trumpet and flugelhorn with Norine Braun on rhythm guitar, ukulele, Navajo flute and vocals.

The concept album is birthed from the Ququnak PaÇ‚kiy Song Collection that Braun wrote from a Canada Council For The Arts Award last year. The songs are based on the engaging and dramatic life story of a Two Spirit, Ktunaxa warrior woman, courier and guide, who lived in the early 19th century. Gone-To-The-Spirits was the gifted oracle and accomplished warrior who appeared in the journals of trappers and explorers and was noted as having transitioned gender and also became a chief.

Braun's irrepressible passion to create music with no imposed boundaries makes this work impossible to categorize. In the beginning, the haunting and ethereal Morning Prayer mesmerizes with ambient ascension toward the heavens. Throughout the album's rich textures of worldly pop, jazz and blues, the listener is transported among dreamy ice fields, rootsy coyote canyons, thunderous storms toward soulful victory and a sublime rock transformation. One enters a sonic journey in this album, to another time where Gone To The Spirits story enfolds. A short story Ququnak Paǂkiy also written by Norine Braun accompanies the album read aloud by the author.

Are You In?

Norine Braun

"Every spring is the only spring, a perpetual astonishment." --Ellis Peters

Hello Beautiful!
No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow. Vancouver is in full cherry blossom bloom and the city looks spectacular and inspiring!
Equally inspiring is recording the new album Gone To The Spirits. We are almost wrapped up only my harmony vocals are left to record and some natural sound fx in between songs. Adam is doing an amazing job producing this new wonder!!
I really appreciate all the early supporters of my upcoming release. YOU ALL ROCK!!! Such a joy as I know you are going to love Gone To The Spirits and thank you very much for believing so, it means a great deal.
Miriam Sweeney an artist in Ireland is doing incredible work on the cd cover for me too! I came across her work and was struck by an image she did and had won an award for. I contacted the gallery that was showing her work to see if I could license it.  Miriam wrote me back personally to say a record company was already negotiating for an exclusve deal on the work I wanted. Of course as a little indie I could not compete with a big label but Miriam being so gracious along with great talent and generosity, agreed to make me something special for my new album and it is spectacular! Everything is coming along so beautifully just like the spring ...feeling ever so grateful.
You can still get in and help launch this new baby with a pre-order, many cool perks are offered including: signed CD, tee shirt and signed piano key! Own a piece of Norine Braun’s recording history. I will sign and send you an original piano key from our vintage upright piano, a 1903 Canadian made Krydner. PS Alice will gladly sign the piano key too - See more at: http://www.norinebraun.com
I do use paypal for the pre-orders and know some folks don't like paypal or credit cards and so some are sending a cheque instead.
